One of the most common questions we see from new Dark Horse owners is: what oil should I be running? Let's break down what Ford officially recommends, what the community does in practice, and what to consider if you're taking yours to the track.

Ford's official spec for the 2024–2025 Dark Horse (5.0L Coyote) is 5W-30 full synthetic — Motorcraft 5W-30 Full Synthetic being the factory recommendation. Oil capacity is 10 quarts with filter. Ford's change interval is 7,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, with the factory fill rated for the full interval. No mandatory break-in oil change is required by Ford.

That said, plenty of us here swap it early — around 500–1,500 miles — just to flush out break-in residue. It's not required, but for peace of mind on a $60k+ car, it's cheap insurance. If you do this, stick with 5W-30 full synthetic.

For track day use: many S650 owners step up to 5W-50 before a track event, then drain and return to 5W-30 for street driving. The heavier viscosity holds up better at sustained high RPMs and elevated oil temps. Ford Performance has recommended 5W-50 for Coyote-based engines in hard track use — worth considering if you spend real time at WOT.

What are you running? Sticking with factory-spec 5W-30, running 5W-50 for track days, or did you do an early break-in change? Drop your setup and mileage below — always helpful for newer owners getting started.
