The Dark Horse carries over the factory drag-strip features Ford builds into its performance Mustangs, and they're some of the most-searched "how do I actually use this" questions from new owners. Here's the plain-English rundown of the three tools and how they work together. Important up front: these are for a closed course / sanctioned drag strip only — never a public road.
DRAG STRIP DRIVE MODE
This is the umbrella. Selecting Drag Strip mode (toggle through your drive modes with the steering-wheel buttons, or pick it from the drive-mode menu on the screen) sets the car up for straight-line launches: sharper throttle response, the transmission calibrated for aggressive full-throttle shifts, dampers set for drag launches, and the active exhaust opened up. Think of it as putting every system in "go straight, go hard" mode. Start here before you use the other two.
LINE LOCK (electronic burnout)
Line lock holds the FRONT brakes while letting the rear wheels spin freely, so you can warm your rear tires in the burnout box without the car creeping forward. It's a factory feature — no aftermarket parts needed. General procedure (verify against YOUR owner's manual — wording and steps can differ by year):
- Get into the burnout box, car straight.
- Follow the on-screen line-lock prompt — typically you hold the "OK" button on the wheel until it initializes/confirms, then press and HOLD the brake firmly until the screen shows the countdown timer (about 15 seconds).
- Once it's armed and holding the fronts, get on the throttle for your burnout, then ease off before the timer ends.
Line lock does NOT hold the car indefinitely and it's not a substitute for the parking brake. It's a burnout aid, full stop.
LAUNCH CONTROL
Launch control manages engine speed off the line so you get a consistent, repeatable launch instead of bogging or going up in smoke. The general idea: set your target launch RPM in the launch-control menu, hold the brake (auto) or clutch (manual) with the throttle floored so the car holds that RPM, then release to launch. Exactly how it behaves — and how much it does for you — varies between the 6-speed manual and the 10-speed automatic, so read the launch-control section of your manual for your specific car. Don't assume it works identically to a buddy's differently-optioned Mustang.
A FEW REAL-WORLD NOTES
- Warm the tires and fluids first. Cold tires + launch control = wasted run and abused driveline.
- These features are hard on the drivetrain by design — use them at the strip, not showing off on the street. That's also where you stay on the right side of your warranty.
- Traction/stability settings interact with all of this; the drive mode generally sets sensible defaults, but know what yours is doing before you leave the line.
DISCUSSION
- Manual or auto — what launch RPM are you dialing in, and on what tires?
- Anyone have the line-lock activation sequence dialed so it arms first try every time? Share your steps.
- Best-optioned setup you've run at the strip so far — Handling Package car or standard?
(As always: exact menu paths, availability, and behavior can vary by model year and transmission — your owner's manual is the source of truth, and anything drivetrain or warranty related, defer to Ford/your dealer.)
